The application time for international master’s degrees in Photonics in PREIN partners is open

The application period for most international degree programs in Finnish universities including the MSc photonics programs in the PREIN partner universities has opened in the beginning of December and closes in mid-January.

In addition to their local international master’s programs the universities are also involved in international joint master’s programs. The joint programs may have application times which differ from the national application times and they application process is generally handled by the coordinating University. Particularly the joint Erasmus Mundus are very popular as they offer generous living cost scholarships to selected as the grant holders. The application and selection processes are competitive, but students may apply to different programs at the same time either in Finnish universities or in the joint program offered by university consortia.
Check the application time and application criteria on the program pages

Tampere University

The Master’s Degree Program in Photonics Technologies provides students with in-depth knowledge of photonics ranging from fundamental light-matter interactions, laser physics and nonlinear dynamics to the design of optical systems, semiconductor technologies, advanced nanofabrication methods and measurement techniques. Specialisations in Photonic Materials and Ultra-Fast Lasers are offered. Students may also choose a minor according to their interest. In addition, Tampere University is involved in a joint Erasmus Mundus Degree program EUROPHOTONICS with France, Germany, Spain and Lithuania, which offers specialisations ranging from Photonics Engineering, Biomedical Imaging, Quantum Optics, Laser Optics, Optics for Astronomy to Nanophotonics and Biophotonics.

Aalto University

Photonics is offered as a specialization in the Master’s Program in Nano and Radio Sciences where the major in Photonics and Nanotechnology gives  students theoretical and practical skills in electromagnetic radiation, modeling, optics, and in materials-related topics that can be applied from nanosciences up to space physics.  The studies in Photonics focus on production, guiding, modulation and detection of light. Advanced Materials focuses especially on nanoscale semiconductors, functional materials, emerging new materials, like graphene and other 2D materials, and their applications. Quantum Technologies gives background for future technologies like quantum computing and cryptography.

University of Eastern Finland

Photonics education in University of Eastern Finland is offered by the Institute of Photonics. The Master's Degree in Photonics offers expert skills needed in international careers in optics, photonics and related fields. The program covers all important aspects from theory to practical work in laboratories with world-class facilities. Three  joint Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree programs cover a more multidisciplinary combination with photonics applications are offered as jointlywith international partners. Photonics for Security Reliability and Safety (PSRS) carried out with French and Italian partners, focuses on imaging technologies, image processing, computational imaging, artificial intelligence technologies, biometrics, pattern recognition, behavioral analysis, spectrometry methodologies, photonic-based sensors, micro-nano-technologies, laser processing and surface functionalization to address the current and future societal challenges related to security and safety of people, goods and environment. The multidisciplinary Master of Science in Imaging and Light in Extended Reality (IMLEX) programme brings together image conversion, lighting and computer science in collaboration with French, Belgian and Japanese partner universities. Computational Colour and Spectral Imaging (COSI) offers education in applied colour science, in various cutting-edge industries in a diverse range of sectors. The program with partners from Spain, France and Norway has two focus areas, spectral technologies and applied colour imaging.
