Funding for two photonics infrastructures from the Academy of Finland
Research infrastructures are instruments, equipment, information networks, databases, materials and services that serve to facilitate research, promote research collaboration and reinforce research and innovation capacity and know-how. The Academy of Finland provides funding for the acquisition, establishment or upgrading and expansion of nationally significant research infrastructures that promote scientific research and to improve the quality, renewal, competitiveness and interdisciplinarity of Finnish research and to increase the appeal of Finnish research environments.
PREIN partners are involved in the following two research infrastructures that were funded in the decision made in November 2020.
Photonics Infrastructure for Research and Industry (PRESI)
The rationale of the Photonics Infrastructure for Research and Industry (PRESI) is to fulfil some of the immediate research and industry needs by providing comprehensive fabrication and characterization capabilities for photonics devices and components. The infrastructure will allow for the development of new materials and integrated components to be used in light-based technology applications including high-resolution imaging, high-sensitivity sensing, quantum technologies, and energy efficient harvesting and production.
The partners in the PRESI infrastructure are Tampere University, University of Eastern Finland and Technology Research Center VTT Oy
Otaniemi Micro- and Nanotechnology Research Infrastructure (OtaNano)
OtaNano is a national research infrastructure offering a wide variety of facilities for the needs of micro- and nanoscience and technology, and quantum engineering. These facilities are important for scientists as well as for high-tech companies working with micro- and nanotechnology applications. The RI is a national platform to develop innovative enabling technologies and apply them to practical micro- and nano-systems. It serves as a first-rate educational centre for young researchers, and acts as a national node for scientific collaboration. OtaNano is an open access research infrastructure, operated by Aalto University and VTT, and available for academic and commercial users internationally. FIRI-INRE project aims to further enforce OtaNano's capabilities towards companies' use of the infrastructure and to support current and future industrial collaborations and innovation activities in particular in the fields of low-temperature physics, quantum computing and nanotechnology.
