Training of New Doctoral Researchers in the Innovative Doctoral Education Ecosystem for Photonics (I-DEEP)
I-DEEP includes all Finnish universities with research activities in light-based technologies and offering doctoral degrees in photonics related fields. The I-DEEP programme addresses the urgent need for training high-level experts in the rapidly growing photonics industry. During the pilot programme period, between 2024-2027 we will train 72 new doctoral researchers in the Innovative Doctoral Education Ecosystem for Photonics (I-DEEP). The selections for the PhD positions have mostly been made during the spring of 2024 and the new doctoral researchers start on August 1, 2024, or January 1, 2025.
Photonics research with a close link to industry
I-DEEP has close connections with Photonics Finland and the National research center VTT, as well as a network of industrial partners. This allows PhD students to have close contacts to the photonics ecosystem during their studies. The curriculum is designed to address the rapidly changing needs of the sector, ensuring that the graduates are adapted to the development of the field and are easily able to move between academia and industry.
Based on top-notch photonics research and infrastructure
The I-DEEP consortium is based on recognized world-class photonics research activities of the universities and it capitalizes on the established collaboration of the PREIN Flagship for Photonics Research and Innovation and the state-of-art facilities of the FinnLight photonics national infrastructure.
The I-DEEP programme offers:
- 3-year fully-funded positions in multidisciplinary environment
- Collaboration opportunities with companies
- International mobility
- Mentoring, career training and soft skills
- Close link to the Finnish photonics ecosystem including PREIN and Photonics Finland
- Summer schools, research seminars, workshops and networking events
- Access to top-notch infrastructure
Selection of Doctoral Researchers
The 72 doctoral positions at the partner universities were opened during March-May 2024. The positions are distributed among the I-DEEP partner universities and each position is filled in by the partner University where the research project will be conducted.
