Study at Tampere University
Tampere University
– High-quality teaching based on world-class research
Tampere University has a long tradition of photonics research and teaching. Photonics has been offered as a specialization in Advanced Engineering Physics for twenty years. The photonics degree programmes are closely connected to the world-class research done at Tampere University.
The Master’s programme provides students with in-depth knowledge of photonics ranging from fundamental light-matter interactions, laser physics and nonlinear dynamics to the design of optical systems, semiconductor technologies, advanced nanofabrication methods and measurement techniques. Students can opt for the specialization in Photonics materials, which focuses on the important role that materials play in modern photonic technologies and in applications like solar cells, optical fibers, or light controlled robots, whereas, the specialization in Ultrafast lasers students learn about laser relevant for applications in imaging, medical devices, sensing and communication.
Tampere University offers the possibility to study photonics in master’s and doctoral levels. In addition, it is possible to apply for the international Bachelor Programme Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Science and Engineering, major in physics and to continue without additional application to the Master’s programme in Photonics Technologies.
International Master’s Degree programme in Photonics Technology
Tampere University offers the international Master’s Degree Programme in Photonics Technologies. The program gives students in-depth knowledge about Photonics as a whole: from the most basic concepts to advanced technologies, and the necessary background to become technology experts, researchers, or managers.
Extensive knowledge about photonics
The students will gain extensive knowledge about multiple aspects of photonics, including:
- fundamental light-matter interactions
- laser physics
- nonlinear dynamics
- design of optical systems
- semiconductor technologies
- advanced nanofabrication methods
- measurement techniques
The programme offers students the possibility to specialize in Ultrafast Photonics and Lasers or in Photonic Materials.
EUROPHOTONICS Joint Erasmus Mundus Master’s Degree programme
Tampere University is also a partner in the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree EUROPHOTONICS organized together by five European Universities. In the EUROPHOTONICS programme students study in at least two European partner Universities. One of the specialization tracks is offered at Tampere University.
The Europhotonics Master program is organized by the following European institutions:
- Aix-Marseille Université (France) (Coordinator)
- Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany)
- Barcelona Universities (Spain)
- Tampere University (Finland)
- Vilnius University (Lithuania)
Complete your degree in different universities
In this high-quality European joint programme the students get to complete their degree in different universities according to their specialization interest in photonics. The Erasmus Mundus status is a prestigious European quality label awarded to joint degree programmes by the European Commission.
