There are several events for different target groups planned for the spring 2023. Some of the activities are annually reoccurring and some events are organized to address topical themes related to photonics. Fairs
PREIN will participate in two major photonics fairs, one in Europe and one is the US. Both fairs are linked to major scientific conferences closely linking research and industry.
PREIN will be participating at Photonics West in San Francisco on 28 January -2 February 2023 with eleven photonics companies in the Finnish Pavilion. Read more on the Finnish pavilion in Photonics West 2023.
In June, PREIN joins the Laser World of Photonics fair with several other Finnish companies exhibiting in the Finnish Pavilion. The Laser World of Photonics fair is organized in Munich, Germany on June 27-30, 2023. More information on Laser World of Photonics 2023.
Outreach events for general public
PREIN will participate in several outreach events in the spring. The outreach activities are mainly organized nationally and targeted to children and young people, but also to the general public to raise awareness of the importance of photonics for the society.
In January, photonics will be one of the themes of the Science Forum (Tieteen päivät) event. The Science Forum is a national outreach event and biennial science festival taking place in several cities in Finland. The Science Forum in Helsinki January 13 will feature two panel discussions with photonics as the theme.
PREIN together with Photonic Finland organizes a panel discussion on a photonics application theme for the general public in the SuomiAreena event in July. SuomiAreena organized on June 27–30, 2023 in Pori is the largest societal discussion festival in Finland promoting the opportunity for every Finn to participate in the debate on social, economic and political issues. Outreach events for children
Together with the LUMA centers (STEM education experts) PREIN will organize the outreach event on light to celebrate the international day of light in May. There will be workshops and activities targeted at different age groups from primary education to high school. The more detailed programme will be published closer to the event.
PREIN will also collaborate with the national LUMA-days organized in Nurmes on June 13-15, and arrange a photonics themed workshop.
PREIN events and workshops
As part of the PREIN internal collaboration, there will be thematic workshops on the shared research themes organized by the different PREIN partners and gathering together the researchers from all the partners focusing on a particular theme.
There will be regular meetings with the PREIN Steering Committee and Management Group as well as the Communications, Innovation and Outreach teams. The work packages will be able to share their latest scientific achievements in the PREIN symposium planned for March 2023.
The Optics and Photonics days organized at the end of May will gather together both the academics and industrial actors in the Finnish photonics landscape. In the annual PREIN event at the OPDs the flagship activities and latest scientific discoveries will be presented to both internal and eternal audiences. The Optics and Photonics Days are organized in Joensuu on May 30 to June 1, 2023.
Industrial collaboration and themed events with Photonics Finland
PREIN will collaborate closely with Photonics Finland to reach out to different industry sectors using photonics applications. One of the ways to increase these linkages is the Photonics for – event series where the different application fields are combined with photonics. To increase company awareness on the opportunities of photonics and increase research collaboration a tour where PREIN researchers would visit targeted companies is planned for 2023. The plans will be updated both on the PREIN and the Photonics Finland web pages.
Student and alumni activities
PREIN promotes the collaboration between the photonics student organisations and sponsors the annual photonics student meeting at the Optics and Photonics Days. In addition, PREIN and Photonics Finland collaborate in arranging recruitment events and tailored training related to finding jobs in the photonics sector in Finland.
