PREIN Flagship for Photonics and Innovation had the pleasure to host representatives of Research Council of Lithuania (Lietuvos mokslo taryba) at Tampere University on August 16th, 2026

to visit our flagship.
The visit to Tampere University was part of their benchmarking visit to the Research Council of Finland (Suomen Akatemia) and the Finnish flagships FinnCERES, GeneCellNano, Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence, InFLAMES Research Flagship, InstituteQ and PREIN – Photonics Research and Innovation Flagship.
PREIN’s Flagship Director Goëry Genty presented PREIN research and innovation, highlighting its close links to the national photonics ecosystem Photonics Finland, extensive business collaboration, and long-term societal and economic impact. These are also among the key expectations of the Research Council of Finland Flagship Programme.
Professor Juha Toivonen provided an example of a start-up company that originated from our photonics research. Cense Analytics has commercialised laser-based measurement technology that enables laboratory-grade soil carbon measurements directly in the field, supporting regenerative agriculture and carbon monitoring. The company is an excellent example of how fundamental photonics research can lead to impactful innovations, new business creation, and practical solutions to global sustainability challenges.
The exchanges with the Lithuanian Research Council representatives were particularly inspiring because of the strong thematic connections between PREIN and the Lithuanian Competence Centres, especially the Terahertz and Hybrid Semiconductor Chip Competence Centre and the Plant Phenotyping for Healthy Food and Sustainable Agrobiological Resources Competence Centre.
Our guests also had the opportunity to visit the Applied Optics and Ultrafast Photonics laboratories, where the delegation learned more about our current photonics research infrastructure and ongoing research activities.
